This exhibition presents artworks from the City of Fremantle Art and Civic Collections as well as photographs, posters and T-shirts borrowed from the local community, to explore the artists, performers and activists that lit up Freo in the period 1977-1985.
The exhibition charts the cultural shift that occurred in Fremantle after 1975, when the city was an affordable place to live, attracting a unique mix of students, artists, performers and activists; creating a vibrant community that engaged with wider political issues. The legacy of this artistic community continues to be felt across WA and Australia.
“Freo was a place where young people with dynamic energy dreamed up ideas and then executed them. We were unconstrained and very open to anyone who came along and wanted to join in” – Micko O’Byrne 2024
