Tour guides for the day!
Quokka Coaches, in collaboration with Beaconsfield School, recently organised an exceptional educational tour of Rottnest Island, offering students a hands-on opportunity to develop crucial life skills. What made this experience stand out was that the students themselves stepped into the role of tour guides, delivering insightful commentary on the island’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and diverse wildlife.
This excursion was more than just a typical field trip. Acting as tour guides, the students were challenged to improve their communication, leadership, and teamwork abilities. The experience allowed them to grow their confidence in a real-world scenario, learning how to engage an audience and convey information clearly. These skills are not only beneficial in school but are also essential in shaping confident, capable individuals who are well-prepared for future endeavours.
David Forrest, the Operations Manager for Quokka Coaches and the driving force behind this initiative, has always been motivated to contribute to the community. He notes:
“In any senior role I’ve been in across my career I have always prioritised community outreach, this has primarily been with local primary schools with a focus on charity fundraising, educational purposes, or both at the same time if the shoe fits.”
The tour also had a charitable purpose, raising funds for Telethon—a cause close to the students’ hearts. Telethon supports children's health initiatives, and by applying their newly acquired skills, the students were able to make a meaningful contribution to this cause. Reflecting on the day, Forrest added:
“I felt very proud and thankful it all went off without a hitch, it was a real team effort.” The event resulted in $1500 being raised for Telethon and the kids got to present the comically large cheque live on the TV broadcast, an experience sure to stick with them.
The success of this initiative highlights the collaborative spirit and community focus that characterises Rottnest Island. Forrest’s connection with the students has strengthened as well: “I can’t drive or walk past the kids now without them shouting hello to me—and also Glenn [driver on the day],” he joked. The event brought together local businesses, schools, and the wider community, reinforcing Rottnest Island's role as more than just a tourist attraction but as a hub where community ties are built and strengthened. It’s a reminder that education, charity, and community engagement can come together to create lasting, impactful experiences for all involved.
